I’ve been taking part in this after school portfolio class for college and I absolutely love it! The teacher has been helping me try different techniques and styles, like blind drawing for two minutes on different subject matters then sculpture practice. Last week she showed me these artists I could study to help influence my art like Andy Warhol and Frida Kahlo, Warhol because I mentioned I liked graphic art and Kahlo because she had a similar problem with her spine like me and I could try incorporate that into my portfolio as the two themes for my portfolio are motion and medical.
I was told I had an advantage to the medical theme as I had surgery on last year and I could take my personal experience to help make art, I still have the x-rays and old medication which I could use. Either to draw or maybe paint onto them or even turn them into a sculpture. Again, it’s only been three weeks since I started the portfolio so there’s still options. I’m lucky because the colleges I want to apply to will also accept the NCAD portfolio, I just have to add some extras for certain courses like animation. They want a storyboard, life drawing, original art with original characters etc.
It still doesn’t feel real, any of it, it doesn’t feel like my last year in school or that I’ll be doing my leaving cert in June. Some of the past portfolio entries were really weird, there was a girl who made an entire leg out of sausages, she had used the meat to make it look like there was tendons and ligaments and then got a blowtorch to make it look burnt and badly injured with wire sticking out to look like bone. There was others who had fashion as their theme and drew models with birds legs and drew a show with a duck’s beak as the heel.
So far, I’ve used inks, finished one prep sheet, made sculptures out of clay to make a hand, pelvis, and spine, did blind drawing of screws and my xray and I’ve used white chalk to draw a shoulder blade and arm. I’ve also drawn Frida Kahlo and some pills, I might add that to the sketchbook.
